Discuss an LOIWhat makes an LOI ready
This scope is for one identified funder that requests or accepts a letter of inquiry before a full application. The letter is up to two pages and uses an existing approved program and budget. It can state the need, activity, audience, request, fit, and proposed next step while keeping planning targets distinct from results.
You receive one draft and one revision. The funder decides whether to invite an application; the letter does not create an award expectation or substitute for the funder's current instructions.
An LOI excerpt, with the reasoning behind it
Northside Arts Workshop is fictional. This writing demonstration is not a real client request, funder invitation, or award.
“Northside is seeking $3,600 toward a $4,800 project budget: teaching artist $1,800, materials $960, space $900, transportation assistance $600, and evaluation/administration $540. Planned other support is $1,200 and is not committed or secured.”
The request is separate from the total project cost, the line items reconcile, and planned support is not presented as money already secured. Your LOI should use the level of budget detail the funder requests.

Start with public initial inquiry information
For the first inquiry, send the funder and public LOI instructions or URL, deadline and time zone, approved program name and short public description, intended request amount or range, and a high-level budget summary. Identify the person who can approve organizational facts.
Keep confidential client information, protected records, passwords, and sensitive attachments out of that initial message. After fit, scope, and access are agreed, we can arrange a separate secure handoff for approved source materials.
A clear process and timing
- Confirm the funder's stated LOI process, fit, scope, and secure materials handoff.
- Draft the letter from the approved program, budget, and requested attachments.
- Return the first draft within the stated timing after complete inputs and access, then incorporate one consolidated revision.
The client approves the facts and final letter, chooses the submission channel, and submits it. Late or incomplete inputs move the working deadline.
Fit and boundaries
This offer does not include a new program design, complex budget creation, federal application, multiple funders, portal administration, or submission on the client's behalf. There is no award guarantee. Work beyond the included revision or outside the approved program and budget requires a separate scope.
What happens if the funder invites an application?
An invitation is a new scope decision. The LOI fee covers the letter and its included revision. If the next stage fits, our short foundation application service can prepare one application from approved materials under a separate agreement.
